We Don’t Need No Education! (The Indian Education System)

Yes, the heading sure does bring back memories of the good ‘ol  days, when a blackberry meant a fruit, an apple meant something to keep the doctor away, and the net meant something made of crisscrossed lines of nylon or similar materials. Science and study have come a long way since, progressing and developing faster day by day, all thanks to an education system built in the states all over the world.

Each country has its own system of education.

India has one too, which had been established by the Britishers, suiting there systes to best, also making it the oldest system of education in the world.

Coming back to the 21st century, we find that education has become an integral part of society, something that cannot be gotten rid of, or rather, one cannot do without. Education is indeed one of the first and most elementary gateways into the world of vocations or jobs and endless opportunities.

Starting from the pre-primary education (kindergarten) of a child or toddler till the tertiary education of an adult (Masters’ or PhD), a person undergoes many levels or types of education before he or she can be declared fit for vocational training or job opportunities.

 

Therefore, we would like to give you a general idea about the education system in India.

The Education System in India is or known as the ‘ten+two+four’, or:-

  1. a)   10 years of pre-high school (primary, secondary and middle school)
  2. b)   2 years of high school
  3. c)   4 years of college or university

 

It is after the completion of these very sixteen years that one is said to have completed one’s education, though there are of course people who go for further studies (such as M.SCs, PhDs etc.) to obtain a better job or for a broader scope of opportunities.

Though most boards are local to the states or are nation-wide, there are also some international boards which have made their space in the Indian Education system recently.

As the local education boards are in charge of the education, the quality of education is not what it should be.

Despite that, India, as a country has made quite the progress, with the literacy rates, having jumped from 12% in 1947 to 75% in 2016.

 

The respective governing boards for education in our country are:-

1)  NCERT (National Council of Educational Research & Training) – It is the apex or the main body which handles all curriculum based matters and also oversees many educational policies in our country.

2)   The State Governments of Education – Each State has at least one local state-based board for its education, though states like Andhra Pradesh have more than one. Also, the Union territories do not have their own Boards and are thus affiliated with the Boards of the larger states.

3)   Central Board of Secondary Education – This particular Board sets or decides the curriculum for classes from 1-12 and also conducts two Board examinations, one after the 10th class (AISSE) and another after the 12th class (AISSCE)

4)   Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations – This particular Board sets or decides the curriculum for classes 1-12 and also conducts three Board examinations, the ICSE examinations (Class 10), the ISC examinations (Class 12) as well as the Certificate in Vocational Education (equivalent to class 12).

5)   National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS): The NIOS conducts two examinations, which are namely, the Secondary Examination and Senior Secondary Examination (All India) and also some courses in Vocational Education.

6)   Islamic Madrasa: The Boards of these Madrasas are controlled by local state governments, or autonomous ones, or affiliated with Darul Uloom Deoband or Darul Uloom Nadwtul Ulama.

 

However,The Education System in India too has its own set of flaws which include: –

1)   The Rat Race mentality: There is no promotion of individual thoughts or an analytical bent of mind, for students who can memorize or mug the study materials and reproduce them exactly in the examination, enabling them to get 90 or a 100, are more favored or preferred over students who might get less, but understand more.

2)   Go with the flow: Instead of learning to criticize what it taught to them about various subjects, the students simply accept whatever is being taught. For eg, if a student is told that the Taj Mahal was built by Shivaji, then most students would accept that as gospel instead of researching that fact and be checking its validity.

3)   Regressive education: The curriculum taught to the students at either their school or colleges are redundant, meaning that the knowledge they acquire is of no practical use when it comes to securing jobs, working in the outside world, etc.

4) Lack of Options: Lot of students are bound to choose subjects they don’t have interest in, like I wanted to study biology in 11-12 but I couldn’t coz commerce doesn’t allow that.

 

One of the main reasons or one of the only reasons that make the Education System in India better than the rest of the education systems involved is the fierce desire or sense of competition that it imbues its students with. Since a student’s worth in India is determined by how well he/she scores in an examination, this very method of determining the worth of a student imbues in him/her a sense of healthy competition which proves to be quite useful for his/her future.

Now, though one might say that the youth forms a major part of our country and that it is only the youth who need to be educated, for it is them who will bring about changes in our country or bring about progress, the adults too play an important role when it comes to progress. However, given that only a small minority of the adults in our country (except the privileged ones and the upper-middle-class ones) are educated, this possibility does seem a bit remote.

As a result, along with that of our youth, the education of the adults is important as well. For if and when the adult begins to be educated, he can aid in the education and development of the youth and their mindsets. Apart from this, it can also solve other problems currently plaguing the government, such as large-scale unemployment or unavailability of jobs. This can be anything from teaching or lab assistants at schools or colleges to computer teachers to even perhaps, lower level managers of MNCs or other organisations.

So, Indian Education system does need some changes, some reforms, starting right from schools itself.

We need to start a skill based education system I believe. May be someone who is not understanding basic algorithm is basically because he is a born biologist. Wellseeing our country getting many reforms, we can hope and wish and always extend a hand in bringing up some good changes.

  1. There’s not a point that I disagree with. The other day I was having this discussion how Indian Education System, though top notch yet lacks in systematizing. It wants to teach an elephant to fly and a fish to walk the earth, that’s not going to happen. It will only demoralize the youth. The amount of attention we give to education, equal amount or more should be given to help harness the talent of every individual, make the syllabus more self sufficient so that our children can earn while they learn.

  2. This is definitely the most debatable topic. The Indian Education system definitely needs reforms but who is working in that direction? From teacher methods to the examination leak cases , we have no verdicts or judgements.

  3. This is something so true and we all know it but wonder why still nothing is being changed .. why common sense is most uncommon in Indian system whether we talk about education, women safety or anything .. well written
