Workouts that help in Depression or Anxiety

Depression can cast a grey shadow on your life but did you know that the secret to some sunshine lies in your treadmill or maybe in the football that has been lying untouched since forever? It may be really difficult to “get out of the bed” and do normal daily activities but little effort can go a long way. Therapists worldwide claim that exercising improves the condition of a depression patient by inducing “happy hormones”.

Yes, that term is REAL…!!

Exercise and other physical activity produce Serotonin and Dopamine

Dopamine drives your brain’s reward system. So when you are praised, its a Dopamine hit in our body which makes us Happy. So when your body works better, it gives better productivity and hence exercises help to induce more DOPAMINE.

Serotonin is a mood-boosting neurotransmitter which is best produced either by antidepressants or naturally by exercising

Scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. About five minutes of aerobic exercise can begin to stimulate anti-anxiety effects.

Here are the few exercises that can help you get fit while fighting depression:

  • Walking: Suffering from depression and suddenly bouncing into an active lifestyle can be an exhausting idea.

However, it is better to start off with some basic walking every day instead of shelving the idea totally. A brisk walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park can be very refreshing. It gets your body moving and also lightens up your mood. You can grab your favorite ice-cream on your way back home to keep you motivated for the next day!

 

  • Running: Running is always a great way to shake up your system and kick the endorphin levels in your body.

Start with a 15-minute run and slowly go up to 45 minutes. Sweating it out by running is definitely going to make you feel great and is surely not going to let you sink back into that bed.                                                               Running in a good park is best as the combination of Blue (Sky), Green (grass n trees) and Brown (Trees n soil) work really great to bring stress levels down.

  • Weight training: Sounds heavy but this form of exercise is one of the best forms of exercises for depression.

It not only helps you in building muscles, makes you more hungry but also elevates your mood. If you can get into the weight training discipline, it is definitely going to improve your depression. Also, weight training can be exhausting physically which helps you have a peaceful sleep naturally.

 

  • Yoga: Yoga is a form of exercise which has been designed to address the issues of mind and body.

Join a yoga class near your home or hire a yoga tutor to train you at home. A yoga class will keep you motivated as you also get to bond with fellow students while a yoga tutor at home will come home regularly to motivate and get you “yogi-field”.

 

  • Aerobics: Aerobics is a full fun form of workout… Grouping with new people and letting your energy loose might really be a good idea. Aerobics makes you tired, helping to sleep better and helps in producing Endorphins and Dopamines

Why is it important to be active while suffering from depression?

Depression may be pulling you down makes you love the bed more but that’s why we need to fight depression, isn’t it? Hence, being active is the key to defeating it. Apart from that, working out makes sure you are hungry and craving for food; Some depression patients tend to skip meals as even eating becomes too much of an effort for them. Exercising fixes this problem; working out makes sure you are hungry and craving for food;

    You have captured it so well, Misha. Going out in the park early morning has solved so many depression status that is mostly caused by people around. It is an instant mood regulator for me when I am in-between nature.

    This is really a very helpful post. Exercising certainly releases chemicals in the brain that elevates our mood. Everyone should exercise. More so if one is feeling down or chronically down. Only problem is to recognise that a person is depressed and then make him go out to exercise.
